Ever since I was younger I have been all about making money. I got a job at a grocery store as soon as I turned 16 and since then I held multiple jobs and internships through college until post grad life where I am now, with a stable career. Living in Denver, Colorado things aren’t cheap though. And even though I am saving money by living with roommates, I am always looking to make extra money to obtain my next goal: buying a house. It is so rewarding to see my hard work pay off, and most recently I was able to purchase a 2017 Jeep Patriot High Altitude. I am always reading other blogger’s ideas on ways to make extra money, so I wanted to share my own that have worked for me!
Whether you are a college student looking for some extra cash or a post grad trying to pay of student loans and work towards financial goals, I want to share some fun ways to make some extra money. I do want to mention, most of my making making tips actually do require you to work a little. It is so easy for bloggers to throw a ton of money making ideas at you like survey taking and cashback websites, but in reality I haven’t had a lot of immediate success with those. My point is, if you are willing to put some effort in making some money, you definitely can! Below are 5 ways to make extra money:
5 Ways to Make Extra Money:
Coach a sports team
I actually stumbled across this idea from personal experience. I wanted something fun to do outside of work and so I researched a couple soccer clubs in the Denver area and came across Skyline Soccer. I was planning on coaching as volunteer because I want to work my way to coaching a middle school or high school team. But when I went in for the interview and got a spot as a Club Coach, to my surprise they told me it was $14/hour. I coach a team of 4-5 year old boys every Wednesday and then fill in for other coaches on the weekend sometimes. They have sessions every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday so I could technically work all 4 days, but I think that would be a little much paired with a full time job. If you love sports (and kids) I recommend researching coaching positions in your area!
Babysit on date nights for families
Babysitting or nannying is a GREAT way to make extra money. My former roommate is a grad student so in her spare time she nannies for families in the area. She makes great money doing this… half the time she tells me how much she makes in a night of babysitting and my jaw drops. I do want to mention that she joined a nannying agency and a lot of the clients who utilize this agency to find nannies are wealthy families. She has got close with a couple of the families where she has had me fill in on nights she cannot watch the kids and they trust her judgement. I recommend researching similar agencies in your area or going to Care.com to make a profile.
Sell your clothes on Poshmark
It is that time of the year where you are going through your closet and pulling out more of your winter time clothes. Take this time to sort through the clothes you didn’t wear this summer or last fall and winter and sell them on apps like Poshmark. Before I moved from my last apartment I listed a couple of dresses I wore only once 1-2 years ago and actually sold them. Sometimes it does take awhile for your clothing to get a hit, but when someone does want to buy something it is such a great way to get some money in your pocket!
Sign up to work weekend events!
A friend of a friend knew someone who worked for a temp agency up in Chicago and needed people in Denver to help with an event. They were assisting with staffing an HGTV event that took place on a weekend and needed hard working people to work it. I ended up sending in my resume, had a quick phone screen and was signed up to work the event until they said they had overstaffed it and I was essentially cut. The following weekend there was another event they said I could work, but the timing was bad and I already had plans. Regardless, until then I had no idea there were these types of weekend opportunities. It was $17/hr for helping with registration so I was bummed it fell through. I would research similar companies in your area and see if you can get on their shortlist for events like this! You can even search Craigslist, but just be careful of scams!
The staffing company was Arete Event Staffing
Be a Brand Ambassador
I had a couple opportunities to be a brand ambassador in college and think it is a great way to make extra money. Not to mention it is fun! Brand ambassadors attend events, set up promotional tables at stores, work expos all to promote the brand/product. And you get paid! I did a quick search for the Denver area and there are so many opportunities, most of which are weekends.. perfect for all my readers with full time jobs. There are a lot of really cool companies that just need high energy and motivated people to promote their brand. If you don’t mind giving up a Saturday for some extra cash, I would definitely look into being a brand ambassador!
Now it’s your turn! What are your thoughts on my tips to make extra money? They do require some effort on your part, but you will see more money in your pocket than sitting on your couch taking surveys for money. Plus you get the ability to be involved in your community and make friends!
