Partner Post
Happy Wednesday Miss Olivia Says readers! Today’s post is all about skincare and what our skin needs to avoid to stay health. As you know, our skin undergoes a lot of battering from the outside world. That’s part of its job, after all. It’s there as a protective layer to the more sensitive parts of our body. But it doesn’t help that we often tend to sabotage it when it’s trying to do its job. The five harmful elements our skin should avoid are as follows:
Friction
As odd as it sounds, friction can impact your skin greatly. Even just wearing clothes causes some friction on your skin. By wearing tight clothing on a regular basis, it can cause chafing which leads your skin feeling raw, red and inflamed. This is not only uncomfortable, but it can cause certain skin conditions to flare up as well. Additionally, without realizing it many of us can cause too much friction by over-exfoliating our skin. This leads to redness, puffiness, breakouts of acne, and much more. Try being a little gentler on your skin, wear looser clothes, exfoliate less, and use green tea tree oil to soothe any red, raw areas.
Dehydration
One of the biggest issues with friction is how much it can dry out and dehydrate your skin. But there are a lot of other different ways we suck the moisture out of our skin, too. For example, if you are like me and love taking a super hot shower, that is actually not good for your skin. Additionally, it is important to be careful when choosing skincare products. Always look for those that promote hydrating effects, not just in your moisturizer. Be careful of certain ingredients like fragrance, which can dehydrate you, too. Retinoids can be good for specific treatment of certain skin conditions, but in general use creams, they are terrible for your skin’s ability to retain water. Dehydration won’t only irritate your skin but will leave it flaky and dull-looking, too.
Pregnancy (and other hormonal shenanigans)
Okay, so this isn’t something you should particularly want to avoid if you are ready to make that step, but pregnancy causes a lot of changes to your skin.. We all know about that pregnancy “glow”. This is actually caused by a production of health oils that makes your skin look much smoother and younger during pregnancy. After having a child, however, the hormones in your body can go a little crazy. These hormonal differences are some of the most common reasons behind skin changes, being one of the leading neck skin tag causes, amongst other things. The good news is that it tends to even out after a while and any lingering blemishes are usually easily treated.
The sun
It should be no surprise that the sun made an appearance in this post. Some exposure to the sun is perfectly healthy and, in fact, recommended. However, unprotected exposure to the sun is not. Besides dehydrating your skin, leaving painful sunburn, and increasing your risk of developing an infection, you should never take the risk of skin cancer lightly. If the sun is shining strong outside, wear sunscreen. Even if you’re not going to the beach or otherwise wearing less clothing. Make sure you err on the side of caution when choosing the right SPF for you. Finally, choose a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. If you choose a cream that deals only with one, then you’re only leaving yourself half-protected.
Washing when you shouldn’t (and vice versa)
Your skin is particularly picky about when it should be washed, and a lot of people cleanse it too much. One of the biggest mistakes is a deep cleanse in the morning. All you need is a simple rinse with water. In the morning, your face produces all kinds of healthy oils that keep skin supple and protected throughout the day. By washing too much, you wash all these oils away. At night, however, never forget to wash away your makeup. Otherwise, you are going to go to sleep with clogged pores, leading to breakouts, irritation, puffiness and an increased chance of an infection. To keep it simple, deep cleanse in the morning is bad, but one at night is good.
You can’t stop every single skin condition and every single blemish, regardless of how good your skincare regimen is. However, you can hopefully ensure your skin is a little healthier and reduce your risks of serious issues like skin cancer by getting rid of the five habits mentioned above.
Now it is your turn! Comment down below what your skin care tips are!
