Makeup products everywhere. In the store, on TV ads, YouTube tutorials, and in magazines. You’ve got a beauty routine which suits, and you’re not willing to break with it. When used in the right way, makeup can provide a fantastic confidence boost. It can help you to be your best you, and keep your head high.
Sometimes, though, heavy makeup use can be an unhealthy habit. While we don’t all need to ditch those brushes, it’s worth asking yourself the following to judge how healthy your current usage is.
Can you go without?
By far the most pressing question is whether you feel comfortable without makeup. A healthy habit is always about being able to take or leave that done up look. In an ideal world, you should feel confident both with and without. If you haven’t already, then, dedicate some time to natural beauty. Start taking makeup off as soon as you get home. Slowly, you may find that you feel confident enough to rock the same look out of the house. Only then can you say that you wear makeup by choice, not design.
Are you covering something up?
Using makeup to cover something you don’t like about yourself is never healthy. Whether you’re concealing a scar or powdering a bump in your nose, this is no way to live. Instead of confronting insecurities, you’ll get into the habit of pretending they don’t exist. What’s more, this is no way to lasting confidence. As soon as you take off your makeup, you’ll come face to face with that thing you hate. If you dislike that bumpy nose enough to use extensive makeup to cover it up, perhaps it would be worth investing in something like closed rhinoplasty instead. This is a much longer-lasting way to deal with insecurity. Or, you could scrap your dislike altogether, and practice a little self-love. Which leads us onto…
Is it harming your self-love journey?
Self-love is big news right now, and with good reason. Sadly, it doesn’t always go hand in hand with makeup. Too often, getting done up each day stops us from being able to practice self-love at all. That’s because this habit is all about accepting and looking at yourself as you are. That’s not something you can do if you sleep with makeup on to avoid it. By stripping back and going makeupless some days, you should find that you grow to love yourself a whole load more. Then, when you do choose to do yourself up, you can really rock the look.
