I have been working 100% remote since I started my new job at a tech company in January. Prior to that in my previous role, I also took advantage of work from home benefits a couple times a week so I have had a few years of experience navigating the remote lifestyle. Due to the current climate and with more and more companies mandating employees to work from home to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, I wanted to dedicate a post to my tips and tricks for a productive work from home lifestyle.
Below are my 5 tips to staying on task during your remote adventures:
#1: Stick to a Routine
I highly recommend sticking to a routine while you are working remotely. Treat your morning as if you are commuting to the office. Before you even think about logging on to your computer, complete your typical morning routine. Although it is tempting, try to avoid working remotely in your PJs. Getting ready for the day helps create boundaries between personal life and work life.
#2: Have a dedicated work place
Even if your living space isn’t huge, it is important to have a dedicated workspace. That means steering away from working from your bed or couch. If your kitchen table is the only option, make it your own work space. It is beneficial to have a dedicated workspace to help with productivity and balancing work and personal life.
#3 Take breaks!
I find it is easier to get glued to your computer and end up working longer hours when I am remote. Not only is your commute gone, but you are in the comfort of your own home making it more difficult to step away. Because your office is now in your own house, it is crucial to take breaks. Block your calendar to ensure you have time for a lunch or a mid-day workout in your living room. I love to take my dog to the park to get some sunshine and ensure he is getting exercise.
#4 Minimize social media distractions
When you don’t have your boss sitting down the hall from you, it can be tempting to turn to social media to fill any gaps in your day. However, it goes without saying that social media at work can be distracting. I recommend limiting any Instagram scrolling to designated breaks. I like to place my phone in my office, but not within arms reach. I find that helps me stay away from the random mindless scrolling
#5 Stick to normal meal times
Snacking while working remotely can get a little out of hand if you aren’t careful. When your refrigerator is a couple feet away, it is definitely tempting. While working from home try and stick to normal meal times as best as possible. This goes back to the importance of having a routine!
