When Paul and I were planning our annual anniversary mountain trip, we decided to cash in some of our AMEX points and book our hotel. Looking back, there weren’t a lot of options on the AMEX travel portal. I think in general because Breckinridge is relatively small, there are not a ton of hotels to choose from in the first place. We decided to book two nights at Gravity Haus, which is a boutique-like hotel right off of Main Street. There are multiple Gravity Haus locations in Colorado and they offer memberships for discounted rooms and co-working space. An interesting concept, and upon arrival, we immediately liked the location and trendy aesthetic.
Our room
Let’s preface this by saying the room was clean, trendy, and comfortable. However, if you are looking for a lot of space, I recommend opting for a suite or looking elsewhere. The bathroom is very small, but there was plenty of counter space for two to get ready at the same time. If you are looking for somewhere to store your clothes, you’re out of luck. There isn’t a closet or dresser. Instead, we hung everything on the small clothing rack, which is perfectly fine for a short weekend.
There were two downsides to our room which ultimately led us to leave a day early. The first is you can hear everything. Anytime the neighbors opened or closed their curtains, walking and talking in the hallway, and chatter in the rooms next door. Gravity Haus actually provides ear plugs on each nightstand because I am sure this is a common complaint. The second downside was the heater. Our room had a heating unit at the bottom of the window that blew hot and dry air all night long. Don’t get me wrong, it was amazing to have heat in 10 degree weather, but the location of the heater at the end of the bed made it hard to breathe and sleep. I think I slept for 3 hours total. And that was after I asked Paul to switch sides of the bed so he could be in the heater’s wrath. I was actually getting over a cold going into the weekend and when I woke up Saturday morning, I was completely stuffed up. I am not sure if there was a relation between the hot air I was breathing in all night, but it was a coincidence.
Ammenities
The hotel had an awesome restaurant, coffee bar, and lounge space. We went to the restaurant for a drink when we arrived and the following morning for breakfast before we left to drive home. When you check in you receive a coupon for a free Prosecco or coffee, which was a nice touch. Gravity Haus also has a huge gym with instructor led classes and co-working space. If you are driving to the hotel, expect mandatory valet. We were able to check in early on Friday and the valet brought our bags up to our room. On the other hand, when we were leaving Saturday one of the two elevators were down and after waiting 15 minutes for a luggage cart, we carried everything down and waited another 15 minutes for our car.
Overall Thoughts
The proximity to Main Street was a huge plus. We walked around Friday afternoon and then ventured back for dinner at Legends in the evening. Although it was freezing, it was a quick walk to and from the hotel. Overall, I don’t think we’ll be back. Clearly the stay wasn’t terrible, but after a bad night of sleep, I was ready to go home. It is a very average hotel, but definitely expect mountain prices with the rooms surpassing $600 per night in peak season. Paul ended up calling the hotel a few days after our stay because they charged the credit card the room rate rather than the points we used to book the hotel. The front desk ended up apologizing and correcting the mistake, but still frustrating. Even though our hotel stay was mediocre, we still had a great anniversary weekend.
