Our hair takes a massive beating from all kinds of different things. We use styling tools that cause heat damage, we use styling products that put chemicals in our hair, and we just generally take poor cair of our previous hair follicles over time.
As I’m sure you’re aware, damaged hair doesn’t look too pretty and can be very hard to maintain. The good news is that your hair doesn’t have to stay damaged forever. There are plenty of tips out there that help you repair damaged hair back to its original state. Not only that, but there are some great tips on how to prevent damage and protect your hair in the first place. I’m not going to go into these tips in detail here. Instead, I want to focus on a little-known way or protecting your hair from damage and repairing it when it has been damaged.
That’s right, as the title suggests, my tip is to wear your hair in certain styles to help protect it. You may think this is farcical, but the truth is that there are plenty of hairstyles that will protect and repair your hair. A Bun
Wearing your hair in a smooth bun – or chignon if you want to be fancy – is a great way of protecting it from many common hair problems. It’s especially good at preventing things like split ends from occurring. The whole aim of a bun is to tuck your hair up, so it’s no longer hanging down. As you can imagine, this will stop the ends from being on show. As a consequence, you’ll avoid frayed ends that start to split. It’s also a great way of repairing split ends as well. If you tie your hair up in a little bun, then you let your hair naturally repair itself and stop being so frayed. The thing I like about this protective style is that it’s really easy to implement and can be worn every day. It’s ideal for loads of different scenarios too because it’s quite a relaxed look. So, you can wear a bun around the house, or out to a coffee date with your mates – perfect!
Rope Twists/Braids
This style can look quite complicated, but it’s actually fairly simple. Rope twists are when you get two strands of hair and twist them around very tightly – almost like you’re twisting a rope together! It’s sometimes known as Senegalese twists, but most people call them rope twists or box braids. Regardless of what you call this style, it’s great for protecting your hair, particularly if you have naturally curly hair. The whole benefit of this is that it requires very little maintenance. As a result, you don’t need to keep applying things to your hair that cause damage in the long run. For example, you’ll no longer need to use straighteners, curling irons, or even hairspray. Not only that, but many reports are saying that braids can help strengthen your hair and prevent hair loss. This is because a lot of hair loss is caused by friction between your hair follicles. They rub against one another – or other things – and it wears them down, and you lose a lot of hair every day. When you’ve got yours in some tight rope twists, then it stops this friction from happening by keeping many strands bunched together and protected within the braids. For this reason, some people put their hair in braids before bed to avoid friction with their pillow!
French Braid
The French braid style has become very popular in the last few years because of how cool and stylish it looks. But, it’s also a very good protective hairstyle for numerous reasons. Firstly, as mentioned before, it’s a braided look, which instantly means you get protection from hair loss. But, another massive benefit is that braids help prevent your hair from becoming a tangled mess. Again, this is a style many people recommend you wear to bed every night. If you do this, then you should wake up with no knots in your hair, which means you don’t spend ages attacking your hair with a brush and damaging it in various ways. Not only that, but you’ll also wake up with naturally wavy hair once you let the braid out. So, this helps avoid heat damage because you won’t need to curl your hair. It can be a little bit hard to get right at the first time of asking, but you slowly get better and better the more you do it. I’ll leave a video above this point to help you do your own French braid for the first time, and it should make things less stressful for you!
Top Knot
Wearing your hair in a top knot style is a great way of protecting it from the sun. We all know that the sun can damage our hair and cause problems in our scalp too. By putting your hair in a top knot, you automatically protect your scalp from sun damage. However, there’s a great little secret with this style that takes it to another level. All you have to do is apply different treatments to your hair before you create the top knot. Many haircare experts recommend putting in hair oil to hydrate your locks, and also sticking a leave-in conditioner in there too. When you’re rubbed and massaged your treatment in, you can tie your hair up in the top knot. By doing this, you help keep all the stuff contained in your hair, and it also sinks into your scalp better. This is a great idea if you want to pamper your hair on the weekend.
You see, hairstyles aren’t just about looking good! If you pick one of these styles, then you’ll help protect your hair from so many common issues. The great thing is, you don’t have to commit to a hairstyle forever – you can just wear yours in one of these styles for a few days to help protect it.
