I recently bought a house and with that means a lot more expenses. I was living with roommates for 6 years saving and only paying half of what my current living expenses. I definitely was more okay splurging and spending money on new clothes. Now I am cutting back on those splurges and finding ways to make my wardrobe more exciting. I wanted to share my 5 ideas on things you can do to make your wardrobe more exciting with clothes you already have!
Mix And Match Patterns
Mixing and matching patterns is a really fun way to perk up your wardrobe and make things more exciting. When you’re looking to mix patterns, you can get as creative as you like, but there’s a rule that can help you to get it right:
- Stick to three patterns.
- Use the patterns with the 60, 30, 10 rule. Choose your main pattern and incorporate it about 60%, then another for 30%, and another for 10%.
- This will give your outfit more depth and make sure you’ve got them just right!
Incorporate All The Colors of The Rainbow
To make sure you’re not neglecting any other elements of your wardrobe, try this tip every day for a week. Pick one color for one week, such as pink, and then force yourself to to reach for things in that color. This will ensure you’re reaching for things other than your ‘go to’ items and make sure everything is being worn. The next week you can have yellow, then blue, and so on.
Build Up Your Accessory Collection
Accessories can make your outfits look totally different, so it’s a great idea to build up a big collection. You don’t have to have a ton of expensive pieces. You can also invest in cool pieces like this personalized nameplate necklace, which is very Carrie Bradshaw-esque.
Keep A Journal
If you really want to get into spicing up your everyday outfits, try keeping a journal and making a note of how you feel about the outfits you’re wearing. This will give you a good idea of the outfits that make you feel awesome and really fit in with your lifestyle. You may love a top that you’ve bought, for example, but you may find that you don’t feel great in the color, material, or that there’s something else about it that doesn’t quite suit your look. Doing this will help you put together a more cohesive looking wardrobe. You could even make Instagram your journal! Post style pictures every day and make it like a microblog. Get creative.
Don’t Forget Your Headwear
Headwear can help to make your outfit look so much better, so consider adding a head scarf, turban, or a hat depending on the occasion. They can make things look so much more interesting!
