If you’re interested in makeup and want to pursue a career that appeals to you on a personal level, it is fairly logical to want to enter the beauty industry. But there are more benefits to engaging with this line of work than merely doing something that you enjoy. When you work in the beauty industry, you get to take on a creative and artistic role within society. You get to focus on making aesthetic statements. You complement the world of fashion. You create new looks and styles. But perhaps the best part of working in the beauty industry? You get to improve others’ quality of life. Of course, at the end of the day, it’s what’s on the inside that counts and everybody should embrace their natural beauty. But when you work in the beauty industry, you can help to make people feel comfortable within their own skin and confident when they step out onto the streets! If this all sounds good to you, here are just a few different roles that you might want to consider trying out yourself!
Makeup Artistry
An area of the beauty industry that is experiencing increasing interest is makeup artistry. The majority of people tend to assume that makeup artists are individuals who are called out to do your makeup for special events and consequently believe that there is limited demand for individuals specialising in this field. But it’s important to bear in mind that makeup artists are in high demand in a number of different sectors. Makeup artists are required to touch up the faces of pretty much anyone who appears on television, from actors to presenters, politicians, news anchors, game show contestants and more. You could work as a touring makeup artist and do the makeup of musicians on tour. Then you enter the realm of special effects makeup artists, who are extremely coveted in the film industry and theatre. So, how do you enter any of these fields? Here are a few steps you might want to follow.
Practice Makes Perfect
Makeup artistry is a creative skill. At the end of the day, you are going to get hired if you can make someone look a particular way, as stated on a brief. So, you need to make sure that your skills are up to scratch. Practice different styles and techniques until you achieve perfection. You can practice on yourself, but it’s generally best to practice on friends or mannequins, as it can be a relatively different experience completing makeup on someone else’s face!
Build a Portfolio
Build a portfolio of different looks that you have created. Employers aren’t going to be able to simply take your word that you are a good artist. They will need proof. Many aspiring makeup artists create pages on Instagram to document and show off their work.
Consider Formal Qualifications
There are various different courses out there that can help you to qualify as a makeup artist. While formal qualifications aren’t always expected, they do show your commitment to the field and competence in your art.
Plastic Surgery
Increasing numbers of people are becoming interested in plastic surgery. This is probably due to the taboo surrounding this subject slowly being broken down by modern day celebrities. In the past, people were generally secretive in regards to procedures that they had carried out. But nowadays, people are a lot more vocal about work they have had done. Some celebrities are even renowned for their engagement with plastic surgery! Now, there are different areas that you can specialise within in this field. If you want to carry out major procedures, such as carrying out breast implant procedures, Brazilian butt lifts, or other more invasive work, you’re going to have a long road ahead of you, as you will have to complete a medical degree and years of specialist training. If this is all a little too much, you might want to consider completing courses such as Botox Training or lip filler training for less invasive procedures. These can still have a profound impact on people’s appearance, but it’s a little less intense as a career path to pursue!
Hairdressing
If you’re interested in working with hair, then hairdressing is the route for you. This can be a relatively tiring job, as you will be on your feet most of the day, but you can make works of art out of people’s hair and build strong bonds with clients along the way! Now, most hairdressers are trained in-house by whichever company they work for. You will generally start out with carrying out simple tasks around the salon and observing how others work. Next, you will be trained in the area that interests you. Generally, hairdressers will specialise in cutting or colouring. Some salons will allow you to learn the basics of each before settling on a specialism. Alternatively, you could specialise in styling, as there is an increased demand for hairdressers who can simply style clients’ existing hair into particular styles. These can include updos and braids of different sorts. A final option is to specialise in extensions. There are various different techniques out there, such as weave, clip in extensions, and sewn in extensions.
These are just a few different areas of the beauty industry that you might want to consider getting involved in. Remember that you are not completely limited to these. These just happen to be some of the most popular areas to specialize in!
