Paris has always and will always be the fashion capital of the world for women. Whenever there is a new trend that’s being set by celebrities, it’s usually thanks to a French designer or at least someone coming from the fashion hub of France. However, men’s fashion is not as straightforward. Although the UK is the capital of men’s high end style, the Western world has developed so many different ways of the suit. Italy, France, Germany and the USA all have their own separate styles. But for now, let’s focus on the American gentleman. The kinds of suits that you see smart men wearing are a mixture of unique Americana and Italian influence. Far more than a suit, there are certain key differences that you only see in America that must also be noted. If you know these following signs, you can clearly define the American gent with just a momentary glance.
Now following convention
For those of us who know about suits, you can tell the American suit style really did like what the Italians had to say. In the south of Italy, you have far more relaxed suits, very airy and loose fitting. The American style uses these rebellious actions and brings them to an even more creative light. Take a look at the many custom made mens suits that the Utah Woolen Mills business creates. Whether you want a sport jacket, a double-breasted, a ‘company’ suit, or perhaps something for fine dining, they can create it with their bare hands. Their tailors will make the suit to fit only you, to give you something special and one-of-a-kind. Pinstripes are just as popular today as they were in the very early years of American history.
The classic silver Hamilton
American suit fashion is always accompanied by some kind of watch. This is a familiar trait from European suit culture. Although many watches for gentlemen are to be worn in the waistcoat, the classic American suit was to be worn with a wrist watch. The classic silver Hamilton is something you see a lot in movies from the 50s and 60s when the modern American suit really took off. A combination of American and Swiss technologies, the Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto watch became synonymous with post-war fashion for men. It was big, round and you couldn’t miss it. Detectives, lawyers, judges, gangsters, politicians and the average man all wore the Hamilton with their best suits.
A brogue standard
Unlike the shoes that you see in Europe, where Oxfords are the most popular, in America the brogue takes the crown seat. You’ve seen brogues in just about every American gangster flick ever made. Brogues are also the top choice for many classic entertainers and performers. American brogues are much roomier and taller than those you see anywhere else. Two-tone brogues are the most iconic.
Although the Wild West is where the American suit was born, the post-war 50s and 60s is when the style of American suits was really defined. Brogues instead of dress shoes, wide and comfortable suits and a classic silver wrist watch are a few things you’ll want to pull the image off.
