I am back after being MIA for a little over a week with more food-related content! Apparently I am a food blogger now because I haven’t come up with any other fun and exciting posts. It is what it is and I know my few readers like my mom enjoy these types of posts (hi mom!). Venturing outside of my ‘Week of Dinners’ series, I wanted to focus more on individual recipes that Paul and I create. In today’s post, I am featuring a bun-less burger with Brussel sprouts we tried out last night.
I think the presentation is a mix of a five-star restaurant with a side of college student throwing together whatever they can find from the fridge. Overall, this meal was relatively inexpensive, although we did go overboard with the Brussel sprouts. We should have cooked half last night and the other half either for lunch or another dinner this week. And if beef isn’t your favorite, you can easily substitute with chicken. Trader Joe’s has some tasty frozen chicken patties you can throw on the grill or stove.
Ingredients: Cooking for 2
- Ground Beef – 1/2-1 pound depending on how big you want the patties
- Dried Onion
- Thyme
- Black Pepper
- Garlic Salt
- Brussel sprouts
- Red onion
- Olive oil
- Burger condiments of your choice: we used ketchup, spicy brown mustard and sriracha
- Optional for extra protein: 4 strips of bacon: we used jalepano bacon we got from our grocery store meat counter (it was only $1.60)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- If you are going the bacon route, place on stove with low heat. Low and slow is the way to go!
- Cut ends off of Brussel sprouts and thinly slice
- Place Brussel sprouts in a medium size bowl, add olive oil, garlic salt and pepper. Mix!
- Place on sheet with aluminum foil. Cook in oven for 20 minutes, mixing halfway through
- In a medium bowl, add ground beef, thyme, pepper, dried onion and garlic salt. Paul added an egg white to help patties stay together, but this step is optional.
- Mold beef into two evenly sized patties
- Grill evenly on each side of the patty (about 4 minutes each size depending on size)
- Cut up toppings of choice: red onion, etc.
- Viola! Assemble your burger to your liking with the Brussel sprouts on top or on the side
If you try out this recipe, be sure to let me know in the comments!
