You’d think that Paul and I would have dabbled in the grocery delivery service during the 3 months of #coronavirus, but this past Sunday was the first time we tried it out. We have done curbside pickup 2 or 3 times, but never have picked out our groceries online and had someone deliver them. This past weekend, we hadn’t gotten around to doing the weekly grocery shopping and when Sunday afternoon rolled around, we decided let’s try out Instacart!
Overall, we had a pretty good experience. On the Instacart website we entered our zip code and it populated a list of stores in the area that we can get delivery from. King Soopers (Kroger brand) is our go-to in Colorado so I went ahead and began searching items and adding them to our cart.
We had a relatively small grocery list for the week so it didn’t take much time to add all the items. One downside was selecting chicken because we typically go to the meat counter and that isn’t wasn’t an option. Also, when you check out you can add a tip (we did 15% since the Instacart shopper gets to keep 100%). The estimated delivery time was 2 hours, however, about 45 minutes in we received notice that delivery would be 3-4 hours. It wasn’t an inconvenience as we were home the rest of the evening. But if we had a tight schedule or were planning on leaving our house, that would be a bummer, but nevertheless it was perfectly fine.
When you place your order you can also add alternates in case the item you selected is out of stock. If you don’t select an alternate and the item is unavailable in the store, it’ll be excluded from the order. Also, based on your order threshold, Instacart places a tentative charge on your account until the final total is confirmed. Our order was around $66 and they placed a $100 hold until the delivery was complete with the final total. We definitely will continue grocery shopping in person for the most part, but after a busy weekend I can see us turning to Instacart again for delivery.
