Way back in 2016 when I was fresh out of college, I made a couple blog posts about easy ways to make some extra cash and featured Poshmark a few times in those posts (not sponsored… but I wish). If you are interested in making some cash on the side, feel free to take a walk down memory lane HERE, HERE and HERE. It is four years later and even though I have a better job than I did right out of college, I still love to make extra money on the side. In today’s post, I wanted to share my selling tips for listing items on Poshmark and Mercari.
Curate your descriptions
Rather than just listing the size and small blurb about the item, take some time and really curate the description. Not only do great captions instill confidence in the buyer, but it can really help your listing stick out from others. Bonus points for including measurements ahead of time!
Take high quality pictures
I highly recommend the cover photo is clear, crisp and good quality because that will grab potential buyers attention right off the bat. If you are using the brand’s photos directly from the website you bought the item from, be sure to also include additional pictures of you modeling the item and close ups of the tags and other features to show it is the same item as the picture(s) you used from the brand.
Add new items
If you are going through your closet and identify a handful of items to list, try staggering the listings over a week or so. I find that when you list items here and there not only will that listing get views, but buyers will like, comment or share older listings too.
Optimize your titles
A lot of times buyers are cross referencing Poshmark or Mercari from their favorite brand to hopefully find what they are looking for at a cheaper price. If I can locate the exact name of an item from the brand’s website, I will include that in my listing title. I’ve sold countless items this way and most recently a bridesmaids dress from Lulu’s I wore to my friend’s wedding back in January.
Ship items quickly
Although this tip is after you make a sale, it is crucial to your seller reputation and ratings. If you ship the item quickly, you are more likely to get a good review from the buyer. Also be sure to package the item with care so it arrives in good condition.
Save packaging from Amazon and other brands
I recently listed a ton of items and made some pretty quick sales. The only problem was I was low on packing materials and had to run to the store and buy some overpriced envelopes. I recently found out that you can go to the Post Office and pick up some slips for free, but since I use a drop box near my house to ship I didn’t think about it! I ended up ordering a pack of 10 packing slips online for future orders, but to save money and trips to the Post Office you can keep packaging from your own online orders and re-purpose for your Poshmark/Mercari orders.
Communicate to your buyers/potential buyers in a timely manner
If you are responsive during the presale and post sale process, that gives the buyer the confidence that you are a trusted seller. Keep your notifications on for comments, counter offers, offers, and even likes. If you make a sale and can’t ship for 2+ days, I recommend communicating that to the buyer so they don’t think you’ve forgotten about their purchase.
