This past week I packed a huge suitcase (more on that in a bit) and hopped on a plane to Los Angeles for a work conference. I joined a new team at my company in August, which requires some travel. However, due to COVID, a majority of the events my team has sponsored/participated in have been virtual so we were so excited to travel to this conference. When the event organizer reached out to me and a few of my team members two weeks ago asking if we would be interested in helping out in person, we all jumped at the opportunity. I had pre-approved PTO scheduled the Friday of the conference so I provided my availability to the organizer and booked flights to LA. Paul and I had scheduled a trip to visit our friends in Minnesota last Thursday-Sunday so I had to get creative with our pre-booked flights to and from Denver. I got all my points back for the flight I booked from Denver to Minnesota and booked a new flight from LAX to Minnesota Thursday after my shift at the booth. Paul ended up finding a different flight that would get in closer to my arrival time making airport pickup by our friends a little easier. Anyway, with all that said, I had to pack a huge suitcase because I would be away for 6 days and in two different climates. I also have a tendency to over pack, but oh well.
Now to the point of this post. I wanted to share my review of the Hotel Figueroa, which is where I stayed for the duration of my trip. I am hoping if and when I can travel more for work, I can make this a series so fingers crossed. Please note, I did not pay for this room with my own money. Because it was a work trip, my expenses were covered by my company.
Hotel Figueroa DTLA is a Boutique Hotel situated in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. It is part of the Hyatt Collection and features Spanish Colonial decor. The main reasons my team chose this hotel was due to the proximity to the Convention Center. It is a short 9 minute walk if you walk as brisk as I do or 14 minutes according to Google Maps.
My manager and I got to the hotel around 2:30, which was an hour and a half before check-in time. Luckily, we were able to check in early because we “downgraded” to a queen bed. The king rooms would not be ready until 4 and I was more than ok with having a smaller bed if that meant I could get to my room quicker. My first impressions of the room were it was small (perfectly fine for a solo traveler) and had cute decor.
The bed was fairly comfortable and had ample charging stations. If you don’t want to work from the bed, there is a nook with a comfy couch and table where I spent time on Wednesday before my shift at the convention. I loved that there was a mini refrigerator so I could keep water bottles and snacks cold throughout my stay. There was also a fancy espresso machine that is restocked daily along with 2 water bottles. I had a lot of free time on Wednesday so I woke up and worked out in the hotel gym. Fair warning the gym is pretty small, but there are 2 Peloton bikes, free weights, and a random machine that I had no idea how to work. Luckily, housekeeping saw I left my room for the gym and cleaned it during the 45 minutes I was away. It was so nice having a fresh room to come back to for the next 5 hours while I was working before my shift.
When I returned from the gym, I decided to make a reservation at the hotel restaurant, Cafe Fig, through OpenTable. There were plenty of reservation options available for 1 person and even though I am sure I would be seated right away if I had just went downstairs for a table, why not get OpenTable points!
I changed quickly and snapped a quick selfie in the mirror before heading down to breakfast. Overall, the food was pretty good. I enjoyed the iced oat milk latte and skillet, but wasn’t a huge fan of the mushy hash browns. Be prepared to spend a lot for a basic breakfast because you are in LA. My total before tip was around $30…
Overall, I enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Figueroa. You can definitely tell it is an older establishment, but they did about 2 years of renovations recently and it is completely updated and has a ton of charm. The staff was so kind and accommodating, which always goes a long way in my book. My coworkers and I were joking that we hope it isn’t haunted. I get spooked easily so I slept with my Calm app playing white noise each night.
