Blow drying actually damages the delicate sheath that surrounds each hair follicle. Over time, high heat can degrade it, leading to split ends and hair that feels like straw.
If you feel like your hair needs a break, leave your hair to drip-dry. Start by towel-drying it and then allow the moisture to evaporate during the day. If you want to avoid colleagues seeing you with wet hair, do it on the weekend.
Your Hair Is Toxic
Chemicals in the environment can very often get into hair and cause it to become damaged. Fumes from motor vehicles react with the protective sheath around the hair strands, leading to degradation.
One way to fight back is to use a purifying shampoo. These remove potentially toxic compounds from the hair, leaving it looking bouncy and fresh. Many products also contain natural ingredients that protect the hair in the future.
You Have A Thyroid Issue
There are a couple of thyroid conditions that can cause your hair to become progressively more brittle over time. One is hypoparathyroidism. In this disease, the thyroid gland produces too little parathyroid hormone which leads to a decrease in circulating calcium in the blood. Calcium is a key nutrient required for hair, so the less you have, the more your hair is at risk.
Hypothyroidism can also lead to dry and brittle hair. In fact, it is an early sign that a thyroid problem might be developing.
You Use Electric Irons
Using electric curlers, irons and tongs is okay for special occasions, but if you use them too often, you will cause damage to your hair. Daily use eventually destroys the hair’s protective layers, leaving it looking frizzy.
If you want to curl your hair, consider using rollers or gentler curling options.
You’ve Been Spending A Lot Of Time In The Sun
Spending a lot of time outside can also affect your hair’s condition. UV rays from the sun, for instance, damage hair strands and make it difficult for them to continue protecting themselves over time. Eventually, the protection fails and the hair becomes much weaker.
You’ve Been Swimming In Salty Water
Lastly, swimming in salty or chlorinated water can also damage hair follicles. Eventually, these compounds react with the hair and break it down. Try showering immediately after swimming to prevent this.
