Last Wednesday, I headed to Boston for a quick work trip. When the event I was planning popped on my calendar back in December, I asked Paul if he would be interested in tagging along. He had never been to Boston so he decided to join me. If you saw my 2023 New Year’s resolutions post, you already know that it is a goal of mine to make an effort to spice up work travel. Whether that is bringing a friend (or my husband) along to desirable locations and/or taking some time to explore while I am in a new city. This isn’t possible for every work trip, for example, I was just in Sandusky, Ohio and that was a pretty bleak place to visit. Regardless, it was so fun having some company with me in Boston and we made the most of the limited time we were there.
After an hour or so delay leaving Denver on Wednesday due to a long line of airplanes waiting to be de-iced, we landed in Boston and took a quick Lyft to our hotel. Back when I started traveling more for work, I tried to pick a hotel loyalty program to stick with. At the time, I chose Hyatt but after quite a few trips, I’ve come to find out that oftentimes, there isn’t a Hyatt in the neighborhood most convenient for my work obligations. However, this time around, there was a Hyatt in the general vicinity I was targeting and I booked two nights at the Hyatt Centric Faneuil Hall. Although the rooms are on the smaller side, the hotel was clean and the service was great (picture below from the Hyatt website because it was too dark to take a high quality photo when we arrived).
When we got to our room, we quickly freshened up and headed to Bar Cicchetti for a drink while we googled restaurants near by. Bar Cicchetti is attached to the hotel and offers a full dinner menu. We were interested in exploring outside of the hotel, so we searched Open Table until we landed on The Merchant, which was a few blocks away in the Financial District. After dinner, we stopped by Elephant & Castle pub and then headed back to the hotel for the rest of the evening.
Thursday:
My work event wasn’t until 5:00pm, so Paul and I had most of the day to explore, work, and try to stay warm (it was chilly!). I recruited Paul to help me pick up my event supplies and transport everything to the venue, so we had some time before the 3:15pm target when we needed to start prepping. Thursday morning we grabbed coffee and breakfast from Tatte before walking a few blocks to Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market. I had visited this area about 3.5 years ago and it was much quieter on this rainy Thursday afternoon. We spent a few hours in our hotel working before grabbing a quick lunch and afternoon coffee from Tatte (yes, again). After lunch, we walked 15 minutes to the Whole Foods to pick up my food order for my event. From there, we took a Lyft to the venue where I spent 2.5 hours and Paul explored on his own. Once the event concluded, I met up with Paul and we went to Joe’s on the Waterfront for a lobster roll. The evening ended with our Lyft driver starting the ride without us in the car and proceeding to drive alone to our destination, where he completed the ride and I was charged. At first we thought he missed our pick up and was circling back, and then realized he was literally driving to our destination without us. We ended up taking an Uber instead due to the fact that the Lyft app showed I was in another ride. At the time of this post, I am still arguing with Lyft that I was not in the car and should be refunded.
Friday:
The trip ended with a long (but easy) flight back to Denver. The travel day was seamless and we even landed early. We were home by 2:45pm and were extremely productive, finishing our grocery shopping and house chores complete ahead of the weekend.
